Question 22

Two water-squash mixtures, the first having a water-to-squash ratio of 4 : 1 and the other having a ratio of 3 : 1, are blendedin the ratio 1 : 2. What is the water : squash ratio in the blend?

Solution

Two water squash mixture are blended in the ratio of 1 : 2

So, lets assume that the amount of first mixture is x and the amount of second mixture is 2x

The first mixture having a water to squash ratio of 4 : 1

So, in the first mixture, the amount of water =$$x\times\frac{4}{4+1}=\frac{4x}{5} and the amount of squash =x\times\frac{1}{4+1}=\frac{x}{5}$$

The second mixture having a water to squash ratio of 3 : 1

So, in the second mixture, the amount of water =$$2x\times\frac{3}{3+1}=\frac{6x}{4}=\frac{3x}{2} and the amount of squash =2x\times\frac{1}{3+1}=\frac{2x}{4}=\frac{x}{2}$$

Thus, the total amount of water = $$\frac{4x}{5}+\frac{3x}{2}=\frac{23x}{10} and the total amount of squash = \frac{x}{5}+\frac{x}{2}= \frac{7x}{10}$$

So, the water and squash ratio in the blend will be.....

$$\frac{23x}{10}:\frac{7x}{10}\\ \\ =23x:7x= 23: 7$$
