On 24th May 2008 the maximum temperature of Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai were recorded as 35°C, 33°C and 34°C respectively. What was the maximum temperature of Chennai so that the average maximum temperature of those cities would be 35°C?

Solution

Total maximum temperature of Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai

= 35°C + 33°C + 34°C = 102°C

Let the maximum temperature of Chennai = $$x$$°C

=> Average maximum temperature = 35°C

=> $$\frac{102+x}{4}=35$$

=> $$102+x=35 \times 4=140$$

=> $$x=140-102=38^\circ$$
