Question 125

Read the given statements and conclusions carefully. Assuming that the information given in the statements is true, even if it appears to be at variance with commonly known facts, decide which of the given conclusions logically follow(s) from the statements.
Statements:
a) All parrots are sparrows.
b) Some eagles are vultures.
c) All vultures are sparrows.
Conclusions:
I. All vultures are parrots.
II. Some parrots are eagles.
III. Only some vultures are sparrows.

Solution

The information in the statements can be represent as follows:

Coming to conclusions:
(1) As we can see, there might be some vultures that are not parrots. Therefore, conclusion 1 is not necessarily true.

(2) "Some parrots are eagles." Although in the diagram, there is an overlapping region between Parrots and Eagles, the region can be empty as well. Therefore, we cannot conclusively say that some parrots are eagles.

(3) This conclusion directly goes against statement c which said that all vultures are sparrows, therefore, this too can be concluded.

None of the conclusions can be reached from the statements.

Therefore, option A is the correct answer.
