What is CAT Percentile?

The CAT percentile is a metric used by MBA institutes in India to evaluate the relative performance of MBA aspirants who have taken the Common Admission Test (CAT).
CAT percentile is calculated based on a candidate's performance relative to others who aspirants appeared for the exam.
For example: If a candidate has scored in the 90th percentile in the CAT exam, it means that they have scored more than 90% of the test-takers.
MBA institutes use the CAT percentile to shortlist candidates for the next round of selection, i.e., group discussion and personal interview. Different IIMs and B-schools set percentile cutoffs for PI calls for selection to candidates. While some top MBA institutes may require higher percentiles, others institutes might be relatively moderate in selection criteria. A higher CAT percentile increases the chances of getting admission to a top IIMs/B-school.

How is the CAT Percentile calculated in IIM Call Predictor?

CAT percentile is calculated in the CAT college predictor using the Equipercentile method, which involves scaling the raw scores of each candidate to a standard scale based on the performance of all test-takers in a particular year. The percentile score represents the percentage of test-takers who scored below that particular score, ranging from 0 to 100.
The formula involves converting raw scores into CAT percentiles, reflecting the percentage of candidates who scored lower than the individual. This CAT percentile ranking is crucial for evaluating candidates performance on a standardized scale. The formula used to calculate the CAT percentile score is:

Percentile requirements based on Category-specific

IIMs often specify percentile cut-offs for different categories of candidates, such as General, SC, ST, OBC, etc. The selection process for admission to IIMs takes into consideration various factors, including the applicant's category (General/EWS/OBC/SC/ST) and gender (Male/Female), with an aim to promote diversity. This may result in different chances of receiving a call for candidates based on their category and gender. These category-wise cutoffs aim to ensure equitable representation and opportunities for candidates from marginalized or underrepresented backgrounds.

Cutoffs for the Top B-schools accepting the CAT score

The cutoff requirements for different business schools vary based on individual profiles. When aiming for the IIMs, receiving a call depends on both the CAT cutoffs and your profile. However, renowned Non-IIM institutions like FMS Delhi and MDI place greater emphasis on the entrance test score (CAT) and assign less weightage to academic performance. Therefore, the cutoffs for these non-IIM business schools are predominantly determined by the entrance test score. It is advisable to refer to the respective cutoffs of the desired MBA colleges for accurate information. You can check out the cutoffs of the top MBA colleges here
