In an army selection process, the ratio of selected to unselected was 5:1. If 100 less had applied and 20 less selected, the ratio of selected to unselected would have been 6:1. How many candidates had applied for the process?
Let $$6x$$ candidates applied for the process.
Candidates selected = $$5x$$ and candidates not selected = $$x$$
If candidates applied = $$6x - 100$$
Candidates selected = $$5x - 20$$
=> Candidates not selected = $$(6x - 100) - (5x - 20) = x - 80$$
According to ques,
=> $$\frac{5x - 20}{x - 80} = \frac{6}{1}$$
=> $$5x - 20 = 6x - 480$$
=> $$x = 480 - 20 = 460$$
$$\therefore$$ Number of candidates who applied for the process = $$6 \times 460 = 2760$$
