A crew can row 10 miles in 5/6th of an hour down-stream and 12 miles upstream
in 90 minutes. Find the current's rate and crew's rate in still water.

Solution

Let speed of crew= 'a' mph

Speed of current = 'b' mph

Down stream ,the speeds will be added

Upstream,the speeds will be subtracted

a+b = $$\frac{\left(10\right)}{\frac{5}{6}}$$

a-b = $$\frac{\left(12\right)}{\frac{3}{2}}$$

Solving the above two equations , a=10 and b=2
