There are many components that can be asked in the Verbal Ability section of CAT which are not categorized into the major subsections like RC, LR, etc. These are all categorized into Miscellaneous.

Some of the common types of questions are given below.

Syllogisms: Syllogisms are more logical reasoning than verbal reasoning. We recommend using set theory to visualize and solve these problems. Draw each case out allowing for all the different cases possible. A note of caution though - syllogisms can be deceptively easy at times. We would recommend you to always draw out the sets in all cases so as to fall into the trap of a deceptively easy syllogism.

Analogies: This is a scoring topic in the VA section of CAT. Students should keep in mind the connectors between the two words to gain vital clues about the question. Analogies are more about logic than vocabulary and understanding the 'parts of speech', 'tone of sentence' and connectors, will help the students solve these questions with a high accuracy.

Facts, Inferences and Judgments: Questions from this topic have decreased in recent years. However, with the change in format and increase in the number of questions, it is likely that questions from this topic will appear again. Students should be careful in identifying the difference between Judgments and Inference. A judgment is the opinion of the author while an inference follows from a set of facts preceding it.

Phrasal Verbs: Many students find questions in this section difficult. In fact, improving in this section is difficult without sustained effort for a few years. However, with practice, students can inculcate the ability to identify the wrong choices and hence improve their accuracy. Reading the sentence out aloud can help in eliminating some options which sound improper.
