Bula Choudhury was born on 2nd January 1970 in Hugli, India. She started swimming at a very early stage when she was only nine years. She is the first woman to swim across seven seas of five continents. She was the first ever Asian woman to swim across the English Channel twice first in 1989 and then in 1999. She then swam across a number of seas like The Strait of Gibraltar in the year 2000 in 3 hours 35 minutes which a world record Tiranian Sea in Italy in 2001, Catalina Channel in the U.S.A in 2002, Great Toroneos Gulf in Greece in 2002, Cooks Straits in New Zealand in 2003. In 2004 she set a world record by swimming 14 hours to cross the Palk Straits from Talaimannar in Sri Lanka to Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu. She was bestowed with the Arjuna Award, Padma Shri and Tenzing Norgay lifetime adventure sports award. She was the MLA in West Bengal, India from 2006 To 2011.
